Chorus

Outstanding singers from the region share their talents with the Symphony Orchestra on a volunteer basis, led by Thomas McNichols. This season the Chorus will perform their own concert, Handel’s Messiah, and perform in this season’s Holiday Pops concerts and Carmina Burana.

Established in 1987, the Chorus has performed everything from requiems to reggae with the Symphony. They provide added texture and versatility to the Symphony’s performance repertoire including Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms, Requiems by Fauré, Duruflé and Verdi, Holst’s The Planets, Orff’s Carmina Burana, and Strauss’ Die Fledermaus, plus Bizet’s Carmen with the The Patrick G. and Shirley W. Ryan Opera Center. The Chorus occasionally performs with other area orchestras and presents its own concerts of Choral Masterworks.

Rehearsals are Tuesdays from 7-10pm beginning September 4th.

The auditions will consist of:

  • Singing a short excerpt of a piece of the applicant’s choosing, a cappella, which demonstrates the applicant’s vocal ability.

  • Sightreading a short example from a choral piece of the director’s choosing.

  • *Singing an excerpt from #7 “And He Shall Purify” from Händel’s Messiah. (This will be coached in the audition, but it is strongly encouraged that singers come with the appropriate part learned.)
