Art & Music Educator Award


The Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra is excited to present the Award for Excellence in Art & Music Education. This award is presented annually to recognize an outstanding educator in music and visual arts who both advocates for the success of students and champions arts education. The recipient receives a commemorative plaque and will be recognized at our season closing concert. On April 27, 2017 the Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra will honor Christina Snyder for the Music Educator Award. On May 7, 2017, South Shore Arts will honor Suzanne Hufford for the Art Educator Award.




2017 Music Educator Award Winner

Mrs. Christina Snyder is a music teacher at multiple schools in the town of Munster and Mrs. Suzanne Teesdale Hufford is an art teacher at Timothy Ball Elementary and Winfield Elementary. Both educators were selected by the Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra & South Shore Arts Education Committee. The selection process included a nomination letter and an additional letter of recommendation from a peer.


Mrs. Christina Snyder was born and raised in LaPorte, IN. Involved in music at a­ young age, she continued in music and went on to study music education at Valparaiso University. At Valparaiso, Christina studied percussion with Jeff Brown and participated in the Chamber Concert Band under the direction of Jeffrey Doebler. Christina attributes her success as a music educator to Jeffrey Doebler and his remarkable music education program at VU. Graduating from Valparaiso University in 2003, Christina was hired at Munster High School and Wilbur Wright Middle School as the middle school band director and assistant high school band director. While working at the high school and middle school, her bands consistently received gold ratings at ISSMA contest and often received Grand Champion honors at Music in the Parks. Christina was selected for the Chicagoland Outstanding Music Educator Award presented by Quinlan and Fabish in 2009. She is currently working at Eads Elementary and Frank Hammond Elementary, also in Munster.

Mrs. Snyder will be recognized for her achievements in music education on Thursday, April 27, 2017 at the Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra’s season closing concert at the Star Plaza in Merrillville, IN.

2017 Art Educator Award Winner


Mrs. Suzanne Teesdale Hufford has led an innovative career as an artist and educator. She studied art at both Northern Michigan University and Central Michigan University. Mrs. Hufford focused her professional career on drawing and papermaking and her art sold in stores in Marquette, Michigan. In addition to her work as an artist, she also taught art for large home-schooled groups. She has been a teacher throughout Indiana and Michigan and is currently an art teacher for Crown Point Community School Corporation. Her passion in education is to help children express themselves and develop a love of art. Her experiences raising children and teaching a range of ages, has driven her to provide a supportive environment where all students can learn.

If I can help everyone to feel successful by developing an idea and carrying out that idea, I am helping my kids for the rest of their lives. That means a lot to me.”- Suzanne Hufford

Mrs. Hufford will be recognized for her achievements in art education on Sunday, May 7, 2017 at the Jr/Sr. High School Exhibit Awards Reception.
